3rd Grade

In the third grade I was still at Shasta Elementary School.  My teacher was Mrs. Carolyn Peterson.  According to my school record book I was 8 years old and weighed 55 pounds.  My new friends this year were "Christina, Dawn, Tia".

On my end of the year report card, Mrs. Peterson wrote: "You have been a joy to teach, Coralee!  You are a special young lady!."

I don't have many specific memories that stand our from this year.  I do have some memories of playing with my friends at their house or my house.  We often played "sharks" at my house.  In our backyard, my dad had built up raised garden beds with 2x4 boards.  We would balance along these boards and if we fell into the bed, there would be piranhas or some type of shark that would eat us.  Anyway, I remember playing imaginative games like that a lot with friends.

One of my best friends, Katie Z. (around 2nd or 3rd grade)

A big event in my life around this time was being baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  My dad was the bishop (leader) of our ward (congregation), so I remember having my "interview" with my dad in his office at church.  My dad also baptized me, so on my baptismal certificate it has space for the bishop, father and person performing the ordinance to sign.  My dad's signature is in all three places.

My brother, Curtis, was serving his mission while I was preparing to be baptized.  He served in Paris, France.  He would send home cassette tapes and I remember listening to him talk about the people they taught and those that were baptized and he would tell me to keep preparing and keep reading the Book of Mormon..  I remember I wanted to finish reading the Book of Mormon before I was baptized.  I would listen to the audio cassette tapes and read along while listening.  We had a big stereo system in our living room and I remember laying down on the floor, wearing the huge earphones, reading along with the tapes.  I think I stayed up a little later a few nights before my baptism, so I could finish.

I think around this time my mom started working part-time (I had two brothers on missions at the same time for a few months, and they both served in some of the most expensive missions at the time - before the equalized payments were made.  One brother was in Geneva, Switzerland and the other in Paris, France.  I think they paid over $1000 / month for each son.)  Anyway, I remember after school, I would play at my dad's office.  At the time, my dad was an institute teacher (LDS religious teacher for college-age students).  He had a storage room in his office with all the old filmstrips and tapes for the seminary and institute, so I would go back there and watch the old filmstrips (turning each frame after the "beep").

I remember going to a few of the institute classes in the evenings when my mom would attend.  Third grade was also the year I got glasses.  I remember on specific evening attending an institute class with my mom.  I was wearing my glasses frames (I think I picked them out that day), but the glass lenses weren't in them yet.  I guess I was wearing the frames to get used to them (?)  It's funny how this particular memory stands out.
